I assume you are ironic when you say that you see all this "magically" coming together, right? There are a couple of companies that would see themselves in the (presumably) benevolent dictator role that you describe, but you have to question their benevolence. But even without a dictator, we could do better than the current mess. It doesn't help, for example, that we keep confusing manageability (that we could declare mostly solved today via ws-management) and management integration. Or architecture with implementation.

Maybe you can help me frame all of this ... I see ITIL, CMDBf, XML Schema, SOAP, WSDL, WS-Addressing, WS-ResourceEnumeration, WS-ResourceTransfer, WS-EventNotification, WS-ResourceCatalog, WS-Unified Management, WS-Man, WSDM, WS-Eventing, WS-Notification, WS-Transfer, WS-RF, WS-Mex, SDL and other WS-* and *.* stuff all magically coming together for Service Management using a SOA. Also, I see ISO (ITIL), DMTF, OASIS, W3C and others (CMDBf.org) all magically interoperating. I think all this is for the good of Service Management, but I think we are probably in need of some governance between all these things (call it a dictator role) otherwise we may all be retired when things come together, finally.
